Dog and kid on deckSpending time with our pet(s) is not only relaxing, it has been shown to improve our health. An article published by WebMD points out that your dog may make you less likely to get heart disease. This is because dog owners walk more and have lower blood pressure than people who don’t have dogs. Pets can also be good for you if you already have heart problems. Studies indicate that heart attack survivors and people with serious abnormal heart rhythms who own dogs live longer than people with the same heart problems who don’t have pets. stroking, or petting, your pet can also lower your blood pressure by helping your body release a relaxation hormone, which in turn reduces levels of a stress hormone. Taking into consideration all the ways pets improve our lives, from both an emotional and physical standpoint, it only makes sense that the outside of our homes should be as conducive to spending time with them as the inside!

Avon CT pet friendly deck designsArchadeck of Central CT strives to design and build outdoor living spaces that can be enjoyed by every member of your family. This includes the four-legged members that are also a huge part of your family! In honor of National Dog Day, we wish to address ways to make your outdoor living space design pet-friendly and a safe place for all to enjoy.

Did you know, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, (ASPCA), it’s estimated that 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats are owned in the United States. Approximately 37-47% of all households in the United States have a dog, and 30-37% have a cat. There are also millions of US households that own birds, rabbits and other unique and exotic pets.

Right from the initial design consultation we have with clients at their home, it is very common to be greeted by a friendly dog or two at the door or see a cat peeking from around a corner or napping in a sunny spot nearby. Since most of our  clients have at least one animal as a valued member of their family, it only makes sense to take their needs and enjoyment into consideration when designing your new outdoor living project. You may be surprised by exactly how many Archadeck customers incorporate pet-friendly design details into their custom outdoor space.

Orange CT deck with Fozzie

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

This photo shows a stunning AZEK deck addition we completed in Orange, CT. To make the design more pet-friendly we installed dual custom gates which we constructed to allow the customer’s beloved dog “Fozzie” to remain safe and secure while enjoying the deck. Fozzie is a therapy dog and brings much joy to patients at the hospital where his job is providing comfort, as he does at home. Since building the project the homeowner’s have adopted a new friend for Fozzie that we understand is just as fond of lounging on the deck!

Even the homeowner’s dog loves this new screened porch!

Archadeck has customized many outdoor structures to make them more pet-friendly. This includes fabricating the rails of a deck closer together to ensure pet safety, installing gates to keep pets safe and sound, pet access doors and using pet screen such as SCREENEZE.  We often implement a more pet-friendly approach in our porch designs by using a solid tempered-glass kneewall to eliminate screens on the lower part of the porch wall, altogether.
