Portland CT Outdoor LIving Combination

The new outdoor living space delivers just what these Portland, CT, homeowners had in mind -- and much more!

When is a deck not a deck? When it is aged, showing signs of wear and no longer performing at its best. As such it can inhibit the way you want to live and entertain outdoors, be an eyesore or even a safety hazard. Like many homeowners across the nation, our most recent Portland client’s deck had become all three. While it had valiantly provided a decent outdoor living space for rest and relaxation, celebrations and cookouts, it was currently falling short in its primary role of meeting the homeowners’ outdoor living needs. With this in mind and due to its age and structural status it had become past its prime and in need of renovation.

For over fifteen years, Archadeck of Central Connecticut has been building decks, screened porches, sunrooms, and other outdoor living spaces throughout Central Connecticut.  As the area’s leading outdoor living space contractor, these Middlesex County homeowners contacted us to transform their deck into the outdoor living space of their dreams. A winning combination, Archadeck is North America’s largest deck and porch builder and the deck is the most well-known and widely built outdoor space in all of America. It remains a homeowner favorite, be it built as a single structure or as part of a combination outdoor living space, paired with a screened porch, sunroom or patio.

Before:

When we initially met with the homeowners they expressed a great need for the current space to be expanded and include an area which could be utilized longer throughout the year and provide some protection from direct sun, pesky insects and other elements. Taking their existing space into consideration, we further discussed their outdoor living needs and wants and quickly sketched out a design that would give the homeowners a deck and screened porch combination space that exhibited all the qualities they were looking for. The agreed upon design added some deck surface within a bump out at one end of their deck to accommodate a 3-season porch and renovated the rest of the deck by resurfacing it and replacing the rails.

After discussing the new vision for the deck, Archadeck of Central Connecticut developed a rendering for the anticipated design. Once the homeowners viewed and approved the complete design we began construction on the project. We started by removing the worn out decking and railing from the existing structure, then began working on the extension of the deck and the framing for the 3-season porch.

Working with Fiberon decking and rail materials we used Fiberon Horizons Ipe for the deck boards combined with Fiberon Horizon/Mission Railing in white. The high-performance, eco-friendly wood alternative decking offers the warmth and appeal of natural Ipe hardwood without all the time and expense of maintenance for the homeowners. With features like capped surfaces for increased durability as well as enhanced stain and fade resistance, Fiberon Horizon is the decking board for those who won’t compromise. The perfect complement to the Horizon decking, the Horizon railing traditional square baluster style features a popular, drink-friendly flat top, and a permanently finished, low-maintenance composite construction which created a high-end custom look for the homeowner’s outdoor space that can withstand the elements for years to come, quite beautifully!

The 3-season porch was an addition to this Portland outdoor living space with the main objective being to provide a space in which the homeowners could enjoy the feeling of being outdoors for relaxing, dining and entertaining without the nuisance of pesky insects and over exposure to the elements. Constructed of white posts and white trim, we installed tempered glass panels below the divider rail, and fixed screen and sliding storm panels above the rail, to provide an unobstructed but protected view of the their beautiful backyard and surrounding landscape. The tie together the interior of the porch, we installed a charming white beadboard ceiling for a finished look.  For enhanced access to the porch from the home, we also removed a window, opened up the wall, down to the floor and installed an Andersen Frenchwood 6′ gliding patio door. This style of door provides old-world character of traditional French doors along with the convenience and space savings no hinged door can provide.
