Outdoor living space styles and colors play by the same rules seen in fashion or trends in home decor. For example, this year navy blue and gray are being touted as “the new blacks” and surprisingly, Archadeck has witnessed an increase in interest surrounding gray decks this year as well!

Gray is one of the most versatile of all the decking colors as it can easily be used to complement or contrast the color of your home’s exterior or other outdoor spaces. Gray has become the “go-to” neutral for many homeowners simply because it offers a change from the mundane browns and beige frequently used in exterior and interior home design. Let’s also not forget; gray coordinates well with virtually every color, making it a failsafe choice.

Recently, one of our gray deck designs was featured in an article on Home Design Lover; a site featuring architectural and interior design inspiration. Here’s a look at our featured deck titled “Unique deck and patio combination design in Middletown, CT”, and more of our projects featuring gray decks as the centerpiece:

Composite deck with built-in benches and privacy wall in Middletown CT

Gray composite deck with built-in benches and privacy wall in Middletown, CT.

This deck proves the power of using the color gray. It is built using low-maintenance gray Fiberon composite decking with a contrasting white Westech vinyl rail which is also low-maintenance. In addition, we handcrafted the built-in Inglenook style benches on site using the Fiberon decking. The benches are not only unique they also  include convenient storage hidden underneath and the high backs serve as a perfect privacy screen– tres chic!

We built this deck  from low-maintenance TimberTech Twin Finish gray composite decking with a white TimberTech Radiance Rail which is also low-maintenance. This design makes good  use of the designated deck area in correlation to the home, and the gazebo. For added comfort and convenience the deck includes built-in bench seating as well. The color scheme chosen for the new deck and gazebo matches the existing home and provides fluidity and better flow within the space.

If you are considering a deck addition in the near future, why not consider gray? From a color psychology perspective, gray is the color of compromise – being neither black nor white, it is the transition between two non-colors. The closer gray gets to black, the more dramatic and mysterious it becomes. The closer it gets to silver or white, the more illuminating and lively it becomes. Gray is also revered in design as being a color that is solid and stable, creating a sense of calm and composure. Choosing gray for your deck addition is sure to provide relief from a chaotic world, and after all isn’t that what outdoor living is supposed to do?
